Mayor lays stress on education

Textbooks distributed to students at charity book programme

EXTENDING HELP: Mayor M. Subramanian distributes textbooks, provided by Jaigopal Garodia Charitable Book Bank, to college students at a function in Chennai on Thursday.

CHENNAI: Chennai Mayor M. Subramanian on Thursday underlined the importance of education and the need to help others.

Participating in a programme organised by Jaigopal Garodia Charitable Book Bank to distribute college textbooks, the Mayor said, “when we become successful, we must do our best to help others.” He distributed textbooks of various subjects, including computer science and economics, to students of several colleges.

Jaigopal Garodia Charitable Book Bank was established in 2000 and in the first year, it provided textbooks to 133 students from 33 colleges. Last year, the bank distributed textbooks to over 6,000 students.

Around 25,000 books in 600 titles are available with the bank and it is aiming to cover 10,000 students this year. No deposits are required to be paid by the students for using the books. The only condition is that they must return the textbooks after their examination.

“There is 100 per cent honesty among the students,” the book bank’s coordinator S. Kesavan said. “The only problem is delay in returning the books,” he said, adding that the problem too would soon be sorted out. Many beneficiaries of the book bank were now well placed in companies.

Students who scored top marks in the X and XII Standard examinations were also given prizes.
