UNPA leaders insulted Kalam: Karunanidhi

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has criticised the United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA) leaders for putting President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in an embarrassing situation by announcing his candidature without consulting him.

In a statement here on Thursday, Mr. Karunanidhi said the UNPA leaders had insulted Mr. Kalam. All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa, who proposed the name of Mr. Kalam, did not even have the courtesy to call on him along with the other front leaders.

The Chief Minister also denied that Pratibha Patil was chosen finally, after considering various names.

It had been the practice to select a Presidential candidate after several rounds of discussions. That was how Ms. Patil was chosen as the UPA’s candidate, he said.
