EC appoints an expert committee to oversee the byelection
MADURAI: The Election Commission has censured the Congress and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidates contesting the byelection to the Madurai West Assembly constituency. Highly placed official sources told The Hindu here on Thursday that the Commission had found fault with K.S.K. Rajendran (Congress) and K. Raju (AIADMK) for entering the office of the Returning Officer along with a large number of persons beyond the prescribed number of four supporters for filing nomination papers. It had issued a notice seeking explanation from the candidates for violating the code of conduct. Rejecting the explanation given by them in the light of reports from the constituency, the Commission felt the candidates had violated its lawful directions and the model code. While censuring the candidates, the Commission cautioned them to be “extra careful” in future. The Commission appointed an expert committee led by its Principal Secretary, A.K. Majumdar, to oversee the byelection and evolve strategies on how the poll process could be improved technically. According to official sources, the committee comprises K.K. Dhar, Head (Instrumentation), Design Development Centre, Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi; S.K. Ship, Chief Manager, Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology, Bhopal; and Suman Singh, Scientist, Chemical Department, Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute. Report sought
Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta has sought a detailed report of the situation in Madurai from Inspector General and Commissioner of Police Sanjeev Kumar. In a fax message, the CEO sought to know the cases reported and action taken at 5.30 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Thursday, police sources said.
