Letters to the Editor
This refers to Ms. Patil's remarks on the veil. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar said in his book Thoughts on Pakistan, ''As a consequence of the purdah system, a segregation of the Muslim women is brought about … All of them, young and old, are confined in the same room ... ''These burka women walking in the streets is one of the most hideous sights one can witness in India. Such seclusion cannot but have its deteriorating effects upon the physical constitution of Muslim women ... Purdah deprives Muslim women of mental and moral nourishment ... Purdah women in particular become helpless, timid, and unfit for any fight in life.'' Why the hue and cry over Ms. Patil's remarks?
