This Day That Age
The drive for elimination of pomp and for economy in administration initiated by the Prime Minister two weeks ago is being carried forward by the Union Home Ministry, which has suggested a series of measures to other Ministries and State Governments. Sparing use of railway saloons by Ministers, discontinuance of the practice of flying the national flag on the cars of Ministers and certain officials and replacement of red-coloured liveries for Class IV employees in the Central Secretariat by short buttoned-up coats and trousers are among the suggestions. A press release says that except where a Minister considers it necessary to use the railway saloon and passes personal orders to that effect, he should travel by ordinary railway accommodation, to which he is entitled as per the rules. Guard of honour should normally be avoided for Ministers. An exception to this rule may be made when the Prime Minister goes to some out-of-the-way place, where it is sometimes desirable that a guard of honour should be provided. Minimum arrangements should be made for the reception, etc. of Ministers. It should not be necessary for any one except a senior executive or a police officer to be present at the railway station or the airport to receive any Minister.
