This Day That Age
An offender can be granted reprieve and rehabilitated. This correctional approach to the crime problem has led the Government of India to set up a Central Bureau for Correctional Services in the Home Ministry. The Bureau, which is to start functioning shortly, will develop a uniform policy of prevention of crime and treatment of offenders. It will co-ordinate the efforts of the State Governments and give them advice and guidance on the latest methods relating to jail administration, judicial lock-up, probation services, after-care remand houses, etc. The other functions of the Bureau will be to standardise the collection of statistics relating to crime, jails, probation and other correctional work under different States. It will promote staff training and research in the problems of preventing crime and treating offenders.
