Rain brings cheer to Bellary farmers

BELLARY: After a week-long dry spell, Bellary, Siriguppa and parts of Kudligi, and Hospet taluks, have been experiencing incessant rains since Thursday night. The rain has brought hope to farmers and will also improve sowing operations in the district. According to reports, it rained in Hadagali, Hagari Bommanahalli, Sandur and parts of Kudligi and Hospet taluks on Friday.

During this kharif season, cultivation is expected to be taken up in 3.89 lakh hectares of land in the district, comprising 2.27-lakh hectares of rain-fed land and 1.62-lakh hectares of irrigated land. Under cereals, the major crops to be cultivated in the district are paddy, jowar, ragi, maize and bajra. Under pulses; tur, bengal gram, horse gram, cowpea, black gram; under oil seeds; groundnut, sunflower, safflower and sesame will be cultivated; and cotton and sugarcane will be cultivated under cash crops.

Owing to scattered rainfall in the district, preliminary agricultural activities such as land preparation and application of manure have been taken up in some of the dry belts such as Bellary, Sandur, Siriguppa and Kudligi. However, following rainfall in the first week of June, sowing has begun in Hadagali and Hagari Bommanahalli taluks.

The achievement is around 33 per cent in these two taluks. In Hadagali taluk, as against the targeted area of 66,780 hectares of land, sowing has been completed in 20,820 hectares. In Hagari Bommanahali 26,990 hectares of land has been covered as against 58,675 hectares.
