HASSAN: Hundreds of activists of Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Friday in protest against the increase in student bus pass rate. They raised slogans against the Chief Minister and the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). District sanchalak of the ABVP Bharath and city sanchalak Madhu said that last year, the student bus pass rate was Rs. 770, but this year, the KSRTC had increased it to Rs. 1,130. This would be a burden on poor students, particularly those from rural areas. In addition to this, through Smart RSID (Radio Frequency Identification) facility, the KSRTC was “exploiting” students who had to attend special classes. This should be withdrawn. They demanded that the increase in bus pass rate be withdrawn immediately. KSRTC Divisional Controller Ganganna Gowda said that earlier the Government used to allow concessions on bus pass for students. Now the Government contributed 25 per cent, student’s share was 50 per cent and that of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation was 25 per cent. This was the reason for the increase in bus pass rate, he added.
