Status quo on engineering admissions extended

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Friday extended the status quo on the engineering admission process in Tamil Nadu till June 29. The result: Anna University may not be able to publish the merit list on June 25 as scheduled.

Justice V. Dhanapalan, who is hearing a batch of writ petitions filed by various associations of unaided self-financing professional colleges in the State, extended his earlier order of status quo after senior counsel for the associations submitted that publication of merit list would prejudice their interests in the matter. They also contended that the associations were not duty-bound to surrender any seats to the Government quota, so as to enable Anna University to admit students under single window system (SWS).

Clauses challenged

The petitioners challenged the validity of three specific clauses in Tamil Nadu Admission in Professional Educational Institutions Act 2006 and the consequential Government Order dated May 25, 2007.

The impugned order directed the colleges to follow SWS to admit students under the management quota; have the qualifying examination marks as basis for admissions; and allocate certain percentage of seats for the Government quota.

The Government, in its counter, said last year’s consensus and agreement on the surrender of 65 per cent of the seats in non-minority institutions and 50 per cent in minority institutions to the Government quota would hold good for this academic year too.

Arguments will continue on Monday.
