Village panels to improve police-public relationship
CUDDALORE: Inspector General of Police (North Zone) K. Radhakrishnan on Friday gave away cash prizes to 50 meritorious students and 19 placement orders in private concerns to wards of police personnel.
The cash prizes are given annually from revenue earned from a marriage hall meant for police personnel. Every year, 50 students, who had completed X Standard and Plus Two are selected. For the first 10 rank holders in Plus Two, a cash incentive of Rs.2,500 is given, and for the next 15 rank holders Rs.2,000. For the first 10 rank holders in X Standard the cash incentive is Rs.2,000 and for the next 15 rank holders Rs.1,500.
Mr. Radhakrishnan said in Cuddalore district 44 coastal village vigilance committees, with a total membership of 416, had been formed. They would keep a watch on movement of strangers, essential commodities and boats in assigned areas.
It was the members of one such committee in Thevanampattinam, who had sighted the six drifting Sri Lankan fishermen and brought them ashore. The IG said to improve police-public relations, 815 village vigilance committees, comprising 6,200 members, had been formed. These committees were passing on information to the police for maintaining law and order and taking preventive measures against any outbreak of caste clashes.
Conflict averted
Thanks to the active cooperation of the committee members and timely action by the police, a major conflict at Thittakudi was averted last month.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (Villupuram Range) G.K. Vanniabperumal and Superintendents of Police Pradip Kumar (Cuddalore) and K. Periaiah (Villupuram) participated.
