19 killed in heavy rain in Karnataka

Karnataka Bureau

15 villages in Bijapur flooded; Jhamkhandi-Bijapur Road closed

Three killed as a tree crashed in Hassan

BANGALORE: Heavy rainfall in several districts in Karnataka left 19 people dead and caused widespread devastation and floods on Saturday. The rainfall was a result of the deep depression that developed over Bay of Bengal in the last two days. There were reports of floods from Bijapur, Bagalkot, Gulbarga, Dharwad, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu and Shimoga districts.

Six persons were killed in Bijapur, seven in Raichur, three in Hassan and one each in Shimog and Madikeri in rain-related accidents.

Hundreds of houses and scores of public property were destroyed when heavy rain lashed Bijapur district in the last 24 hours. The Don, a tributary of the Krishna that runs in Bijapur and Gulburga districts, flowed above the danger level on Saturday noon leaving a trail of destruction. Fifteen villages in Bijapur and Basavanabagewadi taluks were flooded in which a large number of houses and cowsheds were washed away. At least 100 head of cattle perished.

While most people in affected villages moved to safety, two died at Kotyal village. They were trapped in their marooned house and were washed away. However, Deputy Commissioner V.B. Patil, who toured the affected villages confirmed the death of only two persons, and 44 head of cattle. Bijapur-Jamkhandi Road was closed for heavy vehicles as the Sarwad Bridge across the Don developed cracks. Bridges at Tonshyal and Ratnapur were damaged.

Four persons, including two children were buried alive under debris when their houses collapsed at Chikalagi in Jamkhandi taluk of Bagalkot district early on Saturday. Seven persons — two women and five children — were killed on the spot and two persons were injured in two incidents of roof collapse and one of wall collapse in Raichur district on Saturday.

In another such incident, a woman was killed on the spot when the roof of her house collapsed on her at Gonal in Sindhanur taluk.

At Maddipet locality in Raichur city, two 12-year-old boys were killed on the spot when a wall of a house collapsed on them when they were passing through a lane.

Three persons were killed and three injured when a tree fell on Kasturba Road, near Hassan KSRTC bus station, on Saturday. The injured have been shifted to Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences.

One person died at Kutta in Virajpet taluk of Kodagu district on Friday night when a tree fell on the lorry in which he was sleeping. The Bhagamandala-Madikeri bridge and the Bhagamandala-Aiyyangeri bridge have been submerged at the Sangam in Bhagamandala. Talacauvery received 445 mm rain in the past 24 hours (from 8 a.m. on Friday to 8 a.m. on Saturday), the highest in 10 years. The Cauvery is overflowing at Bolibane.

A man was killed in a rain-related incident in Shimoga on Saturday.
