NEW DELHI: K. Sasikiran committed a shocking blunder against Russia’s Sergei Rublevsky and lost the fifth round of the Aerosvit chess tournament in Foros, Ukraine, on Friday. Playing white, Sasikiran was in a fairly comfortable position with two rooks for Rublevksy’s queen in the endgame though the latter had two extra pawns. However, after 50 moves of this interesting Slav Defence game, Sasikiran overlooked the loss of his rook following a check and resigned. The loss pushed Sasikiran to the 11th spot with two points in the 12-player field. Ukraine’s Sergey Karjakin defeated fellow overnight joint leader Alexei Shirov to take sole lead with 3.5 points. The results (fifth round): K. Sasikiran (2) lost to Sergei Rublevsky (Rus, 2.5); Sergey Karjakin (Ukr, 3.5) bt Alexei Shirov (Esp, 2.5); Alexander Onischuk (USA, 2.5) drew with Pavel Eljanov (Rus, 2.5); Peter Svidler (Rus, 2.5) drew wi th Loek van Wely (Ned, 2.5); Dmitry Jakovenko (Rus, 2.5) drew with Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 3); Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu (Rom, 1.5) drew with Lenier Dominguez-Perez (Cub, 2.5).
