New Chief Secretary, DGP for Uttar Pradesh

Atiq Khan

LUCKNOW: In two major administrative changes in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Mayawati on Saturday appointed Prashant Kumar Mishra as the next Chief Secretary of the State and elevated Special Director-General of Police, Vikram Singh as the Director-General of Police. Mr. Singh had assumed charge as Special DGP earlier this week.

He replaces G.L. Sharma, who has been posted as Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the U.P. Police Housing Corporation.

Currently on central deputation as Secretary, Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Mishra is a U.P. cadre IAS officer of the 1972 batch. He will assume charge on July 1, 2007 after the incumbent Chief Secretary, Shambhu Nath relinquishes office on June 30, 2007. Mr. Nath was appointed Chief Secretary in March this year by the Election Commission of India.

Extension

He was due to retire on March 31, 2007 but was given a three-month extension by the State Government at the behest of the Election Commission. His term expires on June 30.

Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh told newspersons that a formal representation for relieving Mr. Mishra has been sent to the Government of India.

He said no decision had been taken on whether the post of Special DGP would be dissolved.

New post

The post had been specially created by the Mayawati Government to accommodate Mr. Singh, an IPS officer of the 1974 batch.

His elevation as the DGP of U.P. was on the cards once he was made SDGP (Law and Order/Crime Control), a post which threatened to minimise the influence of the Director-General of Police, the head of the State police, including PAC and Special Task Force.

Mr. Singh assumed charge as the Director-General of Police on Saturday night.
