CPI ridicules claim on inflation

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India has ridiculed the claim of Finance Minister P. Chidambaram that the inflation rate has slipped to 4.28 per cent and there was a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of 9.4 per cent.

Despite the claim, the prices of food grains, pulses, edible oil, vegetables and fruits have not fallen, rather they have shot up, burdening the common man, the party Central Secretariat said in a statement on Saturday.

It said even corporate organisations such as the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India had rebuked the government’s claim and according to their studies the prices of wheat, pulses, spices, edible oil, meat, milk products and vegetables and fruits shot up by over 25 per cent during January to May 2007.

“Price rise must be a grave concern for the UPA Government. Public distribution system is still a least priority for the Government. The party urged the Government not to be carried away by the “decline” in the rate of inflation but to act firmly to control the prices of commodities, particularly of food items.
