New Delhi: The Indian Newspaper Society (INS) on Saturday condemned the attack on the office of the Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi and asked the Government to bring the culprits to book. Reacting with “shock and horror,” INS president Hormusji N Cama said, “If criminal elements and miscreants are allowed to get away with such violence and threats and if coercive methods are used against newspapers, then the freedom of the press is under serious threat.” In a statement here, he said the INS felt that the Government must view these developments with the utmost seriousness and take urgent steps to bring the culprits to book. “If newspapers and other media are unable to publish news and views without fear or favour, then the very foundation of the democratic polity will get damaged,” Mr. Cama said. “We strongly urge the Government to take immediate and effective steps to ensure that the miscreants and criminal elements do not feel that they can force the press into submission without fear of the long arm of the law.” — PTI
