NEW DELHI: The central committee of the Communist Party of India(Marxist) will hold its three-day meeting, starting Sunday, here to take stock of the latest political situation and the Presidential and Vice-Presidential elections. It will also deliberate on the Polit Bureau’s decision to suspend V.S. Achutanandan and Pinarayi Vijayan from the highest policy-making body. The committee is meeting exactly a month after the Polit Bureau decided that the two Kerala leaders be suspended for trading charges in public. It will decide whether the unprecedented disciplinary action, including the period of suspension, is sufficient or something more needs to be done. Incidentally, the issue came up at the Kerala State committee meeting. The party leaders will brief the central committee on the selection of Pratibha Patil as the United Progressive Alliance-Left candidate for President. The meeting will hear Polit Bureau members on the election for Vice-President scheduled for August. It will discuss the outcome of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and its impact. Developments in Punjab following clashes between followers of the Dera Sacha Sauda and some Sikh groups, and the clashes between Gujjars and Meenas in Rajasthan following the violent agitation by the former demanding ST status will also come up for discussion. On the organisational front, the committee will finalise the schedule of party conferences in the run-up to the congress due to be held next year. The last congress, held in April 2005 in New Delhi, saw a change of guard with Prakash Karat assuming charge as general secretary from Harkishan Singh Surjeet.
