HYDERABAD: The temple town of Srisailam, which is also the site of the massive hydro-electric project, created a record of sorts by receiving 40 cm of rainfall on Friday and Saturday. This is the highest rainfall recorded by any place during the current monsoon. A heavy rainfall of 39 cms added to the woes of the citizens of Kurnool that reeled under the impact of floods in the Hundri. Alampur in Mahabubnagar district recorded 32 cms, Yemmiganur 29 cms and Dhone 25 cms. Several other places in the State also received record levels of rainfall of upto 20 cms on Saturday even after the depression weakened and moved to Maharashtra. As a result, dams and other irrigation projects received copious inflows. Following floods in its tributaries like Tungabhadra and Hundri and heavy rains in Maharashtra region, the Krishna is rising and similarly, the Godavari, Penna, Nagavali and Vamsadhara. Prospects for irrigation and hydel power generation this year have brightened considerably as major projects like Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar, which already have sufficient storages, are receiving good inflows. The storage in Srisailam (total capacity 263 tmcft) has already gone up by 40 tmcft due to heavy rain for the past few days.
