CHENNAI: Women with a passion to drive can take to the wheels on July 1 for an all-women car rally here
Organised jointly by the Duchess Club and Madras Motor Sports Club (MMSC) for the sixth year in running, the rally promises loads of fun and prizes.
Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Duchess Club president Neena Reddy said the event was open for cars of different engine capacities.
A team comprising a maximum of four members may participate, including the driver, navigator and speed and time keeper.
The event will be held for three categories: experts –— a team with at least one member who has won in any previous rally; regulars –— where at least one member should have participated in a rally before, and novice — a team with members participating for the first time.
“The rally has about 20-30 teams as first timers every year,” Ms. Reddy said. Members of the Duchess Club have been classified into a separate category that constitute one-fourth of the participants.
MMSC secretary Rajan Syal said a driving test would be conducted for the participants before the rally. The Best dressed team would be a new award category this year.
About 100 teams are expected to take part in the rally that would cover 80 km in the southern fringes of the city. “The recurring participation spells the event’s success,” he added. The previous year’s winner of the novice and regular would graduate to next levels.
Prizes
Recalling the enthusiastic participation last year, he said a team of women aged over 60 figured among the 80 entries. Prizes worth Rs.2 lakh await the winners. The award function would be held on July 2. The rally would begin from Hotel Savera at 9.30 a.m. on July 1.
The entry fee is Rs.600 per team and entries close at 1 p.m. on June 29. For details, contact the MMSC office at Guru Mansion, TTK Road, Alwarpet. Call 2499 0998 or email mmsc_chennai@yahoo.co.in for details.
