TIRUNELVELI: Mild drizzle continued in the district for the second day on Saturday even as floods in the Courtallam waterfalls subsided.
Strong wind coupled with incessant drizzle uprooted a huge tree near the Tenkasi taluk office, affecting vehicular traffic for a while.
Tourists were allowed to take bath at safer points of Main Falls and Five Falls as flood subsided.
Though there was mild drizzle during the day, the inflow did not increase dangerously.
The level in Papanasam dam, which received 40 mm rainfall, rose to 65.10 feet while the relatively small Servalar dam, after experiencing a precipitation of 28 mm, had the storage level of 106.63 feet. Water level at Papanasam dam has increased from 43.60 feet to 65.10 feet in the past 48 hours while Seravalar dam, which had only 61.35 feet water on Thursday, has 106.63 feet water. Inflow into these dams stood at 7,914 cusecs.
The level at Manimuthar dam stood at 63.50 feet as there was no significant rainfall (only 11.60 mm) in the catchment areas.
Nagercoil
Two persons drowned in Kalikesam on Saturday owing to heavy rain. Ayyappan (27) of Thovalai near Nagercoil, Manikandan of the same area along with six others were taking bath when the two were washed away in flash flood.
The fire brigade and the police are on the look out for the bodies.
Many trees and banana plantations were uprooted at different places. Pazhayar and Khuzhithurai rivers are in spate.
Tuticorin
Rain lashed many parts of the district on Saturday. Following is the rainfall recorded ( in mm) at various places during the last 24 hours ending 8 a.m. on Saturday: Tiruchendur 10; Kayalpattinam 16; Kulasekarapattinam 8.4; Kovilpatti 2; Kadambur 3; Kazhugumalai 2; Ettayapuram 1.5; Sattankulam 11.5; Tuticorin 1.5 and Srivaikundam 4.
