Capturing elegance: A visitor takes a look at the paintings in Puducherry.
PUDUCHERRY: Poet Subramanya Bharathiyar saw his Nandalala in the darkness of the crow and in the green of the trees. This young artist from Bahour sees beauty in everything around him.
“Beauty is what each of us perceives. Not just parrots and peacocks are beautiful. For me, even crows and owls are beautiful. I see them day in and day out in my village, Adhingapattu,” said A. Vasudevan, whose exhibition of paintings is on at the Maison Colombani of the Alliance Francaise in Puducherry till June 26.
For him, the dark skinned village lass draped in a simple sari and decked in flowers is beautiful.
So are the flowers, trees, leaves, paddy fields and everything associated with nature in his village.
“Though my main subject deals with dreams, I have also done quite a number of landscapes ... those that I find around villages. I see fields being swallowed by development. I wanted to record farming activities for the future,” he explained.
Using a mix of oil and acrylic, he has captured the essence of women in their many moods. Mr. Vasudevan, who has done his Bachelor of Fine Arts at Bharathiar Palkalai Koodam (BPK) in Puducherry and his Masters at Government Arts College, Chennai, has participated in a number of workshops and art camps.
His passion for the arts began in his school days, to be polished later during his stint at the Bal Bhavan.
“A teacher there, Mr. Ganesan, encouraged me and told me about BPK. I then joined the arts college. In the beginning, my sketches were very simple. Topics like kolams were my subjects. It was only later that I picked up compositions,” he said.
