Comic books are an instant hit among young students Books are arranged according to age groups and classes
Madikeri: Will inculcating reading habits among kids in the elementary and pre-primary class help them boost their skills of creativity and imagination? The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan-Kodagu Vidyalaya (BVB-KV) School and Composite College here believes so, which has prompted it to set up a library, “Children’s Corner”, in the school. Books ranging from those for children to adult books, of different designs, themes and topics are stocked in this new library. “Alice in the Wonderland”, for instance, is highly popular among children. Comic books too have been an instant hit among them. The library showcases a large variety of books, right from those for kindergarten students to bedtime stories, books on history, geography, science and its advancements, mathematics, the country’s cultural heritage, religious saints and the Amar Chitra Katha series, in Kannada, English and Hindi. Children’s Corner is aimed at nurturing creativity in children and helping them increase their power of imagination, says Director of BVB-KV Rajeshwari Raghu, who was instrumental in introducing the concept. Abundance
She says the abundance of reading material available is bound to encourage children who are disinterested in studies to sift through the pages and glean information that will prove useful to them. Books are arranged according to age groups and classes. The novelty of the kindergarten section of the library is that pictures play a dominant role in almost every book. The colourful pictures and comic strips are a huge attraction for children, who love to feast their eyes on them. Storytelling
Dr. Raghu says that in the kindergarten section, the teacher is the storyteller and helps the children grasp the essence of the stories in the books through the pictures displayed. She says that this is, in fact, the German and American way of storytelling. In this method, children ask their teachers questions by looking at the pictures, and the storyteller should be competent enough to answer them satisfactorily. “Education should be joyful and fun,” Dr. Raghu explains.
