TIRUCHI: The Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Holy Cross College (Autonomous), has created a ‘literature database’ of medicinal plants with anti-diabetic properties. The database that could be accessed in the department portal of the college website: www.holycrossindia.ac.in, contains a list of medicinal plants used for treating diabetes along with the documentation of the research undertaken so far for each plant. The details containing the antioxidant, antimicrobial and hypoglycaemic properties of the plants would be of utility to researchers and students, and enlarge scope for developing drugs for diabetes from medicinal plants with hypoglycaemic action.
According to the Principal, Rosy, the research activities of the department has culminated in identification of five novel anti-diabetic and antimicrobial compounds from medicinal plants, which are subject to patenting. The department seeks to arrive at remedies for diseases by coupling ancient knowledge with scientific principles, she said.
