Clouds that gathered over the Malayalam film industry seem to have vanished for the moment. A truce was reached between warring factions of film producers and technicians in Kochi on Friday night. The producers agreed to increase the daily allowances of drivers and unit members involved in production work. Technicians responded by agreeing to work in unison with the producers for keeping to the budgets of movies. According to the agreement, producers, production controllers and directors will be held collectively responsible for crossing the estimated budget. The producers agreed not to hold only the director responsible. The director will be asked to maintain discipline in the use of film roll, and he or she will have to ensure that the shooting is completed within the schedule decided by the producer. A joint committee of producers and technicians will be formed to ensure a peaceful atmosphere in the industry. Vinayan, director and general secretary of Malayalam Cinema Technicians’ Association (MACTA) Federation, said peace would prevail in the industry. Concerted efforts would be made to ensure the success of movies made here. Kireedom Unni, who represented the producers in the talks, said differences between the technicians’ federation had been settled. Shooting of nine films began on an active note on Saturday after coming to a halt following the strike. Post-production work of some of the coming movies resumed to the relief of distributors and exhibitors. A big list of directors and actors made an earnest effort for the last two days to resolve the deadlock. Marathon discussions involving senior actors and directors were held in Kochi to find a breakthrough. G. KRISHNAKUMAR
