Girls to get special vaccine to prevent cervical cancer

DINDIGUL: Special vaccine that prevents cervical cancer would be administered to adolescent girls in the next six months. At present, the vaccine is under clinical trial. Such efforts would make the women strong and healthy, said Anbumani Ramadoss, Union Minister for Health.
Talking to media persons before taking part in the party’s youth conference here on Saturday, he said that the vaccine was in use in the U.S. It must be modified to Indian conditions. After successful trials, this vaccine would be introduced to adolescent girls to prevent them from cervical cancer attack. Allotment of funds for research and prevention of cancer had been increased to Rs.2,700 crore from a mere Rs.280 crore in a decade.
Approximately, 15,000 people in nine States had been affected by Chikungunya. Kerala was the worst affected with 12,000 cases followed by Karnataka with 800 cases and Gujarat 500. The number of patients affected in Tamil Nadu and Orissia were just 15 and 45 only.
The Central Government sanctioned Rs.20 crore to take preventive measures. Each State would get Rs.2 crore each. Additional funds had been granted to Kerala.
Lauding preventive measures taken by the Tamil Nadu Government, Dr. Ramadoss said that the disease would last for four years. Already, the disease attacked the people in 1963. Above all, participation of people was a must to control the disease, he added.
Clean-village scheme
A sum of Rs.6.25 crore had been sanctioned to take preventive measures and keep villages clean under National Rural Health Programme. Each village would get Rs.10,000 to destroy mosquito breeding areas. Over 5.14 lakh village health committees had been formed in the country so far to create awareness.
Reacting strongly to the President election, Dr. Anbumani said that the third front was trying to politicise the issue. He also assured that the PMK would extend full support to farmers on Mullaperiyar issue.
