ERODE: “It is unfortunate that every day lakhs of people are dying of diseases caused by smoking cigarette, beedi and cigar around the world. So the youths should come forward to create awareness among the people about the evils of smoking and chewing tobacco,” said the Collector, T. Udhaychandran, on Thursday during the anti-tobacco and cancer awareness campaign conducted by the Indian Medical Association, Erode.
Accidents
The Collector said tobacco chewing, like road accidents, was killing a number of people every day and the youths should educate people on the need to give up the habit. He said, “Health cost of treating diseases caused by tobacco is formidable.” Cancer was caused by continuous use of tobacco.
Further, tobacco affected lung, heart and brain of a person. The president of Indian Medical Association, Erode, Dr. P.S. Radhakrishnan, and the secretaries of KVIT Trust, C. Kumarasamy and Dr. Sengottuvelu, addressed the gathering.
A panel of doctors explained the evils of using tobacco and how it affected the health of the people.
Earlier, a tobacco and cancer awareness rally in which more than 300 students and doctors participated was taken out from IMA Hall, Sampathnagar to Government Headquarters Hospital. The secretary of Indian Medical Association, Erode, S. Eswaramurthy, had made arrangements for the programme.
