KORAPUT: The agitation following a road accident near Semiliguda in the district on Friday morning brought to focus the inability of the administration to restore normalcy and the untold hardship travelling public were put to as a consequence. Three youths from Kakigaon were killed in the accident involving a truck. Local people immediately blocked the highway and staged demonstrations with the bodies. With lower rung officials failing to pacify them, the Sub-Collector had to rush from Koraput to the accident spot. “But, he too was not successful in convincing the protesters of the need to clear the traffic as the compensation they demanded was too high,” said Trilochan Pradhan, BDO of Semiliguda. With no letup in the situation, commuters were the worst hit as they were stranded from morning. Being time to take lunch, they pleaded with officials to make arrangements to lift the blockade. But officials merely expressed their helplessness. The police, too, donned the role of a spectator, doing little to clear the road, said one commuter.
