Fast to spare Silent Valley
Staff Reporter
Organised by Forest Protective Staff Association Government should drop the project: Sarah Joseph
PALAKKAD: Malayalam writer Sarah Joseph has said that “the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is trying to destroy the unique Silent Valley rain forest which even the British rulers of India had spared during their rule.”
Prof. Sarah Joseph was inaugurating a day-long fast organised by the Kerala Forest Protective Staff Association near the Mannarkkad police station on Saturday, demanding that the State Government drop the proposed Pathrakadavu hydroelectric project close to the Silent Valley National Park.
She said that the British rulers who exploited the forest wealth of the State did not touch the rainforest.
They had extracted timber from the forests in other areas but did not fell trees in the Silent Valley. But the present native rulers are trying to destroy the rare forest with the move to construct a hydel project close to its boundary.
Global warming
The State Government should drop the project to save the rainforest, especially when the whole world is concerned about the devastating effects of global warming.
Other sources could be found out to meet the power demands of the State, she said.
The meeting was presided over by K. Jayakumar, President, Kerala Forest Protective Staff Association. P.S. Panikkar, secretary, Jana Jagratha, and Tony Thomas, Director, `One Earth One Life,’ addressed the meeting.
