252 houses damaged in Saturday’s rain

KOTTAYAM: A 12-year-old girl was washed way in the district on Saturday taking the death toll in the monsoon to two. Two others were reported missing.

According to the police, Gloria, daughter of Sunny of Edavattil House, Kangazha, near here, was playing with her cousin in the compound of the latter’s house when she fell into a nearby rivulet.

Non-Resident Indian Sunny’s family had arrived on a visit to Kangazha just two days ago. Gloria’s body was recovered downstream. The body of Thangan, 52, of Kalarickal House, at Peringalam, near Adivaram, who was washed away on Friday, along with his cow, was retrieved downstream Edakkarathode. His body has been shifted to Kottayam Medical College Hospital.

Madhu, 34, of Athirezhathu House at Thodanal, who had been missing since Friday night, was reportedly washed away in the Meenachil river from Valiapalam at Pala. The police said they received reports about a person having been washed away in Panchikkad panchayat.

Meanwhile, strong winds accompanied by short spells of heavy rain marked most parts of the district on Saturday. Gales were reported from Aarpookara area and the eastern hill ranges.

Incessant rain in the high ranges increased the inflow of water into the west flowing rivers. Most of the low-lying western areas in the district are facing the threat of inundation.

District authorities have opened 19 relief camps, mostly in Kottayam and Vaikom taluks, to shift people to safety.

According to the control room, 252 houses were damaged in the rain on Saturday. The total damage has been pegged at Rs.14.6 lakh, they said.
