Cumbum Valley, Theni and Periyakulam areas receive rain
MADURAI: The level in the Periyar dam is fast shooting up following heavy rain in its catchment areas in the last two days. The dam recorded 133 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours that ended 8 a.m. on Saturday.
With an inflow of 8,863 cusecs, the level jumped five feet in 24 hours. It touched 115 feet at 8 a.m. from 110 feet. It further rose to 116.10 feet (total permissible height is 136 feet) at 4 p.m.
The Public Works Department officials have stepped up the discharge to 609 cusecs to augment the storage in the Vaigai dam, the primary source of water supply for Madurai city.
The level in the Vaigai dam was still depleting and stood at 21.78 feet (full level 71 feet). However, it is likely to go up with the water released from Periyar dam on Thursday reaching it on Saturday evening.
The combined Periyar credit stood at 1,581 mcft.
Theni
The entire Cumbum Valley, Theni, Andipatti, and Periyakulam areas received showers since Saturday morning. The sudden increase in storage level cheered farmers who have started preparing the field for the first crop. The rains would help meet irrigation needs of first crop in the double cropping areas spread over 14,707 acres between Cumbum and Veerapandi this year.
There was rain at several places in Dindigul district also.
Rainfall recorded in various places (in mm) in the 24 hours: Tekkadi 101, Gudalur 52, Bodi 34, Gudalur 52, Uthamapalayam 27, Shanmuganadi 12, Veerapandi 10, Madurai 6, Mettupatti 5, Manjalar dam 4, Peranai, Kallandiri, Chittampatti and Melur 2 mm each and Sathaiyar dam 1.
