Coimbatore: Coimbatore Corporation on Saturday commenced its two-day drive to prevent breeding of mosquitoes to prevent the outbreak of chikungunya.
The drive was inaugurated in the Coimbatore West Zone by the Mayor, R. Venkatachalam in the presence of Corporation Commissioner, P. Muthuveeran. Deputy Mayor, N. Karthik, Health Committee Chairman, P. Nachimuthu, West Zone Chairman, P. Selvaraj, City Health Officer, M. Thangaraj and Corporation Education Officer, M. Thangaraj.
Educating the public
The drive was aimed at educating the public on the need for taking precautions to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes.
It would also focus on the symptoms of chikungunya and the preventive measures required.
The Corporation had mobilised thousands of volunteers and workers to carry on the drive simultaneously in all the 72 wards.
Each ward was divided into six zones, wherein these volunteers would educate the need for covering the drinking water containers to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes and also for mixing the abate solution in water stored for other purposes (other than drinking) in drums, plastic containers and cement tanks.
Conservancy workers
The conservancy workers were used for removing discarded tyres, plastic containers, coconut shells that led to accumulation of water serving as a breeding ground.
The drive was carried out by 30 to 50 workers/volunteers in every ward. These workers would conduct the drive between 7.30 a.m. and 1 p.m. every day and compile the daily report.
The daily report from every ward would be compiled zone wise and would be submitted to the Commissioner. The drive would conclude on Sunday.
