Call to spread ‘water literacy’
Staff Correspondent
Belgaum: A loud message was sought to be conveyed through a seminar on rainwater harvesting organised by the Belgaum City Corporation here on Saturday.
The response to the seminar was deplorable with only a few officials attending such an important programme aimed at not just creating awareness but also motivating people to implement rainwater harvesting techniques.
Corporation Commissioner M.S. Chennappagoudar, who arrived almost an hour late, urged officials to harvest rainwater in their office buildings and houses.
‘Harvest rainwater’
The need of the hour was to harvest rainwater and help recharge groundwater table, he said.
S.G. Joshi, Associate Professor, S.D.M. College of Engineering and Technology, Dharwad, made a presentation and emphasised the need to spread “water literacy” among the people.
Success stories
There were several success stories in north India where people had changed even dry and barren land into cultivable fields by harvesting rainwater.
About 30 officials from different departments, including the staff of the corporation, participated in the seminar.
