Traffic disrupted: People removing the tree which fell across the road in Suntikoppa in Kodagu on Saturday.
Madikeri: Heavy rain accompanied by gale has been lashing Kodagu for the past 24 hours, affecting life in parts of the district. One person died at Kutta in Virajpet taluk on Friday night when a tree fell on the lorry in which he was sleeping. Electricity supply has been disrupted across the district since Friday night following uprooting of trees and snapping of power lines. The Bhagamandala-Madikeri bridge and the Bhagamandala-Aiyyangeri bridge have been submerged at the Sangam in Bhagamandala, cutting off traffic between Bhagamandala and other parts of the district. Talacauvery received 445 mm rain in the past 24 hours (from 8 a.m. on Friday to 8 a.m. on Saturday), the highest in 10 years. The Cauvery is overflowing at Bolibane, disrupting traffic between Napoklu and Murnad. The victim, who died at Kutta, has been identified as Mani (32), a lorry cleaner. The driver of the lorry and Mani had stopped their vehicle carrying silver oak logs as the road was blocked owing to uprooting of a tree. Later in the night, another tree fell on the stationary truck, killing Mani on the spot. The driver has been shifted to a hospital in Mysore in critical condition, according to the police. Two persons were injured when a tree fell on their house at Karugunda in Madikeri taluk. Two houses were damaged when trees fell on them at Krishna Colony in Ponnampet of Virajpet taluk. Two more houses at Mangaladevinagar and Chamundeshwarinagar in the city were damaged because of heavy rain, the police said. Traffic disruptions
Traffic at Peraje in Madikeri taluk was disrupted when a tree fell across the road, the police added. A large number of trees have been uprooted in the district because of the gale. The water-level in the Cauvery is rising at several places. Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav has asked officials not to leave their respective headquarters in view of heavy rain. Kutta recorded 115 mm rainfall, Srimangala 124 mm, Ponnampet 155 mm, Gonikoppa 160 mm, Virajpet 207 mm, Siddapur 137 mm, Somwarpet 191 mm, Napoklu 195 mm, Bhagamandala 388 mm and Madikeri 259 mm in the past 24 hours.
