Policemen, lawyers play important role in getting justice
‘Policemen should be aware of latest judgments’

DHARWAD: District Principal Judge Pradeep Vaingankar has said that policemen will be able to discharge their duties in an efficient manner if they have a fair understanding of law.

He was speaking after inaugurating a district-level “Legal workshop” for policemen, organised by the District Legal Service Authority, District Police and Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissionerate here on Saturday.

Proof

Mr. Vaingankar said that adequate proof and witnesses were required for punishing the guilty. Unless policemen had a fair understanding of the law, it would be difficult to punish the offenders, he said.

He said the police had the responsibility of ensuring protection to witnesses and clear their apprehensions about the police and the court.

Human face

Dealing with the public with a human face would not only earn a good name to the department, but also help in improving law and order situation, he added.

Presiding over the inaugural function, Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissioner Narayan Nadamani said policemen and lawyers played an important role in getting justice to exploited people.

He said policemen should be aware of the latest judgments and cases.

Educating the witnesses would help in getting due punishment to the guilty, he added.

Mr. Nadamani explained the manner in which information was being given to the accused and their lawyers in cases pertaining to human rights violation.

Principal Civil Judge H.M. Shivakumar Swamy, in-charge Superintendent of Police D. Prakash and vice-president of Dharwad Bar Association B.S. Ghodse were present.

The inaugural session was followed by lectures. by Sub-Inspector Prabhu Gangenahalli, senior advocate S.S. Shivalli, and former police officers D.M. Nayak and Basavaprabhu Hosakeri.
