‘Farmers left in the dark on insurance scheme’
Staff Correspondent
HASSAN: The former Congress Minister and MLA B. Shivaram has criticised the Government in general and Hassan district in particular for not creating awareness among farmers on insurance scheme for rain-fed crops.
He was speaking to presspersons here on Saturday The Government of India had launched taken up this scheme as a pilot project in 74 hoblis of 13 districts in the State and five hoblis of Hassan district are included in the project.
The project was aimed at preventing suicide by farmers as it was a long-term plan where crop insurance would be given in four stages — if there is less rain and if the crop is lost at the sowing, flowering and harvest stages. June 25 is the last date and yet the district administration had failed to educate farmers about the scheme, he alleged. Mr. Shivaram said that recently, Chief Minister H.D. Kunaraswamy, Lok Sabha Member H.D. Deve Gowda and district in-charge Minister H.D. Revanna had toured the district for two days. But in none of their functions did they mention the scheme.
Mr. Shivaram said that during the Assembly election, Mr. Deve Gowda had assured people that if his party came to power, it would work for the welfare of farmers. But after the elections, they had done the opposite.
They had acquired more land in Hassan as well as in Bangalore Rural to safeguard the interests of multi-national companies and industrialists, he alleged.
The Congress was opposed to setting up of the Tadadi thermal power project near Kaushik village as it would affect environment in an area of 8 km. MLC S.M. Anand and environmentalist Mohan were also present.
