Traffic, parking problems are most challenging issues: Sood

Special Correspondent

Bhaskar Rao to be the new Police Commissioner

MYSORE: The outgoing Police Commissioner Praveen Sood has described the traffic situation in the city and vehicle parking problems as the most challenging issues that will confront the city in future.

Mr. Sood, who was the Commissioner of Police for nearly three years, has been transferred to the police headquarters in Bangalore as IGP and his place here will be taken by Bhaskar Rao, Director (Vigilance), Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday to express his gratitude to the people of Mysore for their cooperation during his stint in the city, Mr. Sood said he received tremendous affection from the public as also the elected representatives and would cherish his stay in Mysore.

Projects

He recalled the various projects launched in the city during his tenure, including traffic signal lights that were increased from four to 23, blinkers and zero tolerance zones, besides embellishing many circles. But he said that increase in the vehicular traffic and lack of space for parking would be the major problems.

It was time the authorities did something about it including levying parking fee so that only in genuine cases the motorists would insist on parking their vehicles, he added.

Pointing out that parking was free in Mysore except at a few places, Mr. Sood said no city extended this gesture in modern times and called for major initiatives in this regard in view of the projected growth of Mysore that was bound to result in the further growth of vehicle population.

On the dangerous practice of autorickshaws ferrying a large number of children to schools, Mr. Sood pointed out that he had initiated a move in which the KSRTC had agreed to release 100 buses to transport school children from their respective homes to school and back. But the parents wanted their children to be dropped at their respective homes and were not prepared to receive them at a designated stop nor were the schools keen on shouldering additional responsibility of collecting the fee and coordinating with the KSRTC, he said.

Memorial

Mr. Sood said a memorial in honour of all the police who lost their lives in the operations against Veerappan would come up at Jalapuri. The bust of Superintendent of Police Harikrishna would be installed at the circle and the names of all policemen who lost their lives in the operation would be engraved at the memorial, he said.
