Plan to plant 50,000 saplings in the city Public offices and schools will be included under it
MYSORE: District in-charge Minister G.T. Deve Gowda on Saturday announced an ambitious project to improve the green cover in Mysore. He had convened a meeting of senior officials of various departments and non-governmental organisations here to discuss on the ways to implement the project. In all likelihood, the project will be launched in the last week of July. Mr. Gowda also inspected the preliminary work of planting saplings on the premises of P.K. Sanatorium. It has been planned to plant 2,500 saplings in 50 acres of land belonging to the sanatorium. The Minister aims to create awareness among people on the importance of protecting the environment and rainwater harvesting. Mr. Gowda had visited the sanatorium on June 19 and directed the officials concerned to plant saplings on both the western and southern slopes. According to Deputy Conservator of Forests, Mysore Division, B. Chikkappaiah, planting of saplings in the city will be taken up on a large scale. The Forest Department will provide logistics support by providing earthmovers to clean the area and the Departments of Watershed Development, Agriculture, Horticulture and Public Works, and Mysore City Corporation will provide technical support, besides providing labour. He told The Hindu that officials of forest and watershed development departments had developed 25 per cent of the 50 acre area by constructing contour bunds, percolation tanks and digging percolation pits of different size. “It is an attempt to involve public in improving green cover in the heritage city, with minimum burden on Government exchequer. Though it costs Rs. 150 to plant a sapling by preparing the area, the department has not estimated the total cost,” he said. Efforts were on to plant sapling on the premises of public offices, institutions, new layouts, college and school. It would be the responsibility of the organisations and institutions concerned to protect the saplings planted on their premises, he said. The plan was to plan 50,000 saplings across the city, he said and added that the department was having 35,000 saplings at its disposal and the rest would be procured from Bangalore and Tumkur. Though Minister wanted to plant one lakh saplings at a stretch, it was difficult to procure the saplings in a short span of time. However, the target would be achieved in the next few months, he added.
