Project prepared using remote sensor technology Data can be used when setting up schools
Chitradurga: The Union Government launched Natural Resources Data Management System (NRDMS) under the Ministry of Science and Technology in 1992. The aim was to prepare a mapping system which included the data of all departments under the limits of the zilla panchayats and the district administrations. According to the project, a computerised system had to be prepared to obtain information pertaining to any department. In Karnataka, the task was entrusted to the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST), Bangalore. “A few key objectives of the project is to prepare data about demography, geography, agriculture, socio-economic conditions and infrastructure which includes roads, transportation, drainage, educational institutions, hospitals and tourist places. The information system can give details of every sector in all the districts,” said U.T. Vijay, project engineer, KSCST. He said the project had been prepared at all the zilla panchayats in the State using Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensor technology. He said that the system had been implemented in 21 districts in the State and would be implemented in the other districts by the end of July. The Government had provided computers and hired experts in the remaining districts for the project. “Though the project was launched throughout the country, Karnataka is the only State where the project was implemented in almost all the districts,” he said. Chitradurga zilla panchayat engineer, K. Nagaraj said that a map of a district, taluk, village or even a hobli is prepared using the software. Twenty seven departments came under zilla panchayat and district administration. The data obtained from various departments was colleted and added into the software. The computer then generates an image of a map. Citing an example, Mr. Nagaraj, said that if the Government decided to set up schools in a particular taluk or village, it was necessary to first know the number of children there and their age group. Based on the data the exact number of schools would be set up.
