‘New Vice-Chancellor soon’

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy said here on Saturday that Governor T.N. Chaturvedi was likely to approve a new nominee for Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) in a couple of days as the Search Committee, constituted by the Government, had already recommended three names for the post.

“Once the Governor approves one among the three for the post and makes the announcement, the Government will make the appointment immediately without any delay,” he said. The tenure of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor K. Sudha Rao ends on Monday.

Speaking to presspersons after laying the foundation stone for the proposed administrative block of KSOU near Mandakalli airstrip, here, the Minister said the appointment would not take much time since the committee, which also consists of a representative from the Government, had already submitted the list of probables to the Governor.

Unlike the Acts of the conventional universities in the State, the statutes of the KSOU and Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) were different.

In their case, the Search Committee would recommend names for the Vice-Chancellor’s post directly to the Governor. “Only after the Governor approves the person for the post, the Government makes the appointment,” he said.

However, he ruled out amendment to the statute of the KSOU. “The question of amendment to the act do not arise since the committee had already finalised the probables and the list is with the Governor,” he said.

The Minister clarified that the Government had no role in the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor to the KSOU and the VTU.
