Heavy rain claims seven lives in Raichur district

flooding
About 300 affected families have been shifted to safer places



Hardships: Water released from the Maski nala flooded a village in Lingsugur taluk in Raichur district on Saturday.

RAICHUR: Seven persons, including two women and five children, were killed and two injured in roof and wall collapse following heavy rain that lashed the district on Saturday.

According to official reports, a woman and her two children and another girl were killed on the spot and two injured when the roof of a house where they were sleeping collapsed on them in Kallur village of Manvi taluk in the morning.

The police have identified the deceased as Hanumanthi (28), her children Narasimhalu (3) and three-month-old Mahalaxmi, and Tayamma (2), daughter of Lachmappa. The injured are Narasappa (30) and Laxmi (26). The have been admitted to the district civil hospital.

In another incident, Muthamma (18), wife of Amarappa, was killed on the spot when the roof of a house where she was sleeping, fell on her in Gonal village of Sindhanur taluk.

In another incident of collapse of the wall of a house in Maddipet locality in Raichur city, two 12-year-old boys were killed on the spot.

The police identified them Vinay, son of Shivaputappa and P. Sunil, son of Basawaraj. The wall, which was soaked in heavy rain, had fallen on the boys who were passing through a lane in the locality, they said.

The district has been experiencing moderate to heavy rain since Thursday. Continuous rain had forced the authorities to release water from the Maski nala in Lingsugur taluk by lifting all its ten gates. This had resulted in flooding of more than 150 villages.

About 300 families have been shifted to safer places.
