Foundation stone for new administrative block of KSOU laid

Launch of work: Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy, unveiling the plaque to mark the foundation stone laying ceremony for the administrative block of KSOU in Mysore on Saturday. KSOU Vice-Chancellor K. Sudha Rao and Deputy Commissione r S. Selva Kumar are seen.

MYSORE: Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) Vice-Chancellor K. Sudha Rao on Saturday emphasised the need for establishing five more open universities in the State so that the increasing demand for distance learning was addressed and Karnataka emerged a leader in providing distance learning opportunities.

“When the State has medical and engineering universities and Kannada University and also plans to have a music university, the number of open universities in the State must go up. There is a great potential and the State should tap it and emerge number one,” the Vice-Chancellor, whose tenure ends on Monday, said, speaking at the foundation stone laying of the administrative block of KSOU near Mandakalli airstrip here.

Prof. Rao said the KSOU was establishing its regional centres across the State since the demand for distance education was on the rise. “If five more open universities are established, on the lines of KSOU, they could address the needs of the people in the respective regions across the State,” she observed.

“Our (KSOU) experience could be made use for achieving great strides in distance learning,” she noted.

The Vice-Chancellor said the university had acquired land in some places and is looking for it at other places for establishing regional centres. While it had succeeded in Mysore, Shimoga, Gulbarga and Dharwad, the efforts to acquire land in Davangere, Mangalore and Bangalore were yet to materialise. “Yet, our efforts are on and the new Vice-Chancellor should pursue them,” she said.

Replying to the objections raised over allotting land to open universities, Prof. Rao said the open universities required land and building of their own since they run practical-oriented courses.

She said the new administrative block would come up on a 10-acre land where the foundation was laid on Saturday, and thanked Deputy Commissioner S. Selva Kumar for getting the things done within a short span of time.

Endorsing the view to have more open universities in the State, Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy said KSOU alone could not handle the pressure of meeting the demands of distance learning.

He said the State had to achieve a lot in higher education despite making significant strides in the area. “The coalition Government, in the last 15 months, has approved 168 colleges, whereas in the last 50 years, the number of colleges was just 171,” he said.

Mr. Selva Kumar, Manjunath, MLC, and Registrar of the university Sundar were among those present.
