‘They should cooperate with administration’
‘Make Salem district free from child labour’

SALEM: The active participation of chairpersons of panchayat unions is essential for the effective implementation and monitoring of various rural development projects, Collector N. Mathivanan has said.

Inaugurating a refresher training programme for the panchayat union chairpersons organised by the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) here on Saturday, the Collector said that the elected representatives of local bodies should cooperate with the district administration to ensure holistic development of rural areas.

The Central and State Governments were executing several schemes such as Swarnjayanthi Grama Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY), Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana (SGRY), Total Sanitation Campaign and Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam for improving the infrastructure and the quality of life of poor people in the rural areas.

Listing out various development works taken up in the district, Mr. Mathivanan said that the DRDA was constructing houses for 2,739 beneficiaries at Rs. 6.85 crore under the Indira Awaz Yojana.

Kutcha houses of 609 beneficiaries were being improved at Rs. 76 lakh.

Works to the tune of Rs. 12.34 crore were being carried out under the SGRY scheme to improve the infrastructure and provide employment opportunities to the people in the rural areas. A total of 4,087 development works were being carried out under the Anna Thittam in 82 village panchayats.

Under the SGSY scheme, Rs. 80 lakh would be provided as revolving fund to 800 self-help groups and Rs. 5.1 crore as subsidy linked with economic loan assistance to 500 groups this financial year.

Vocational and management training programmes would be provided to 625 groups, he said.

He asked the chairpersons to motivate the village panchayat presidents to take steps to get Nirmal Grama Puraskar award by achieving total sanitation. Concerted efforts should be taken up to make Salem district free from child labour, he said.

DRDA Project Officer D. Jagannanthan and senior officials were present.
