Awareness rallies taken out

Be aware: A rally to create awareness among people about the need to control mosquito breeding being taken out in Salem on Saturday. Collector N. Mathivanan flagged off the rally.

SALEM: The Salem and Namakkal district administrations organised rallies to spread awareness among people on the need to control mosquito breeding on Saturday. The rallies were organised as part of the State-wide drive to prevent the outbreak of diseases such as chikungunya and dengue.

In Salem, Collector N. Mathivanan flagged off the awareness rally at the Collectorate. The rally passed through Agraharam, Chinna Kadai Veethi, VOC Market and several thoroughfares before concluding at the Bose Maidan.

The participants carried placards and raised slogans asking the people to empty the water got stored in unused containers. People should keep their surroundings clean. Handbills carrying information on the measures to be taken up to prevent the outbreak of chikungunya were also distributed during the rally.

More than 600 students, staff members of Salem Government Medical College Hospital and private hospitals, sanitary personnel of the Salem Corporation, doctors and elected representatives participated.

Corporation Commissioner M. Jayaraman, Joint Director of Health M. Gnanasekaran, Deputy Director (Tuberculosis) K. Arunagiri, City Health Officer B.R. Gemini and senior officials were present.

In Namakkal town, a similar rally was organised. Flagged off at the Namakkal Municipality office by District Revenue Officer G. Govindaraj, the rally passed through bus stand and several important streets before concluding at the municipal marriage hall.

Mr. Govindaraj said that the district administration had intensified the measures to control the breeding of mosquitoes. More than 200 workers were involved in spraying mosquito repellents in the town.

The sanitary workers were undertaking fogging activity both in morning and evening hours. Anti-larval exercises were being carried out in all parts of the district, he added.

District Rural Development Agency project officer P. Renuga Devi, Mahalir Thittam project officer Muthumeenal, Namakkal Municipal Commissioner S. Kalaiselvan, Joint Director of Health Dakshnamurthi, Deputy Director of Health Sampathkumar and senior officials were present.

Similar awareness rallies were also organised in various parts of the two districts.
