MADURAI: In the wake of violence and charges of distribution of money to voters, democracy is at stake in the Madurai West Assembly constituency, said S. Thirunavukkarasar, national secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party here on Saturday.
Campaigning for party candidate C. Sasiraman , Mr. Thirunavukkarasar asked how people could vote for a party, which had no hold over one of its Union Ministers.
One Minister issued a statement saying the Chief Minister would observe a fast if the Election Commission postponed the byelection, while the other vehemently denied it.
Would any Minister dare to issue such a statement suo motu?
The Congress, the alliance partner of the ruling party, might not get a ministerial berth even if it won this seat, he said.
Neither the Congress nor the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam could voice public concern. While the Congress lacked the courage to do it, the AIADMK was keen to stage walkout in the Assembly.
He said the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam had no locus standi to seek votes. Its leader and an elected member, cited one reason or the other to stay away from the Assembly.
Hence, voters should give the BJP an opportunity to take public grievances to the Assembly, he said.
Voting for the BJP would mean giving life to Atal Behari Vajpayee’s innovative schemes on rural empowerment and rural education.
Former Union Minister Pon. Radhakrishnan also campaigned for the BJP candidate.
