Two undergo 24-hour ordeal on tree top

M.V. Subramanyam

Officials requisition expert swimmers and rescue the duo

KADAPA: Two villagers of Palur, Hussainaiah and Mahabub Saheb, who tried to cross Kundu river at Peddamudiyam in Jammalamadugu constituency, hurriedly climbed a tree when water gushed in and spent almost 24 hours perched on the tree, amidst constant downpour, chilly winds, pitch darkness and without food and water.

After a couple of attempts to bring them to safety failed, they were rescued at dusk on Saturday. Hussainaiah and Mahabub Saheb hoped to cross the river as water level was minimal, but water gushed in all of a sudden and encircled them. Fearing for life, they got onto a tree top and awaited assistance since Friday evening. Back home, Palur was among six villages that got inundated by Kundu river water.

Revenue and police officials requisitioned expert swimmers from Mylavaram to rescue the duo, but they made a retreat after swimming for some distance in the swirling waters.

Boat capsizes

Meanwhile, Jammalamadugu DSP Narasimhulu and Rural Circle Inspector M. Venkatadri and two local presspersons of a leading daily set off in a boat in a bid to rescue the two persons, but the boat capsized midway. The police officials and scribes managed to catch hold of a tree nearby.

Swimmers, who were sent in another boat, rescued police officials and scribes and brought them out safely. Meanwhile, officials brought some fishermen from Mylavaram and they rescued the two villagers perched atop a tree.

Revenue and police officials, under the supervision of District Collector M.T. Krishna Babu and Jammalamadugu RDO M. Ramachandra Reddy, successfully completed the rescue operation on Saturday night.

The two villagers as well as the district administration heaved a sigh of relief and set off to their destinations. Hussainaiah and Mahabub Saheb thanked officials and police, who not only rescued them but satiated their hunger.

Six villages inundated

Kundu river has been on spate on Saturday and inundated six villages - Palur, Nemalladinne, Garisalur, Balapanagudur, Chinnamudiyam and Nagarajupalle villages in Peddamudiyam mandal.

Officials launched rescue and relief operations for people of the villages. There were no casualties in these villages, according to Mr. Ramachandra Reddy.
