CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed the Director-General of Police to give adequate police protection to a Kudavasal-based advocate and his family members, who were attacked by a gang on January 14.
Justice K.N. Basha, passing orders on a petition filed by advocate D. Sivasankaran, also stayed all further proceedings, including investigation, of a criminal case registered against the petitioner.
Family attacked
The matter relates to the attack on Mr. Sivasankaran and his family members by a group of persons in Kudavasal in Tiruvarur district. After being attacked with weapons, the petitioner opened fire with a licensed revolver, killing two members of the group.
Subsequently, his house and business premises were ransacked. After being arrested in connection with the incident, the petitioner was let out on bail.
Still not able to return to Kudavasal, he filed a criminal original petition, seeking protection for himself and his family; interim compensation of Rs. 5 lakh; stay on all further proceedings in the case registered against him; and a list of officials, who would investigate the matter.
In his order, Mr. Justice Basha said: “In view of the reasonable apprehension expressed by the petitioner, that there is a serious threat to his life as well as to the lives of his family members, this court is constrained to direct the DGP to make adequate arrangements by giving proper instruction to the police to give suitable police protection to the petitioner and his family members.”
