Inter-Church Council protests against violence

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Inter-Church Council for Education has protested against the violence unleashed by the Students Federation of India (SFI) against holding of entrance examinations by self-financing professional colleges.

Council chairman Archbishop Joseph Powathil said in a statement here on Saturday that political parties or their feeder organisations should not think that they could infringe upon minority rights.

He said the council has set apart 25 per cent of the seats for the poor and proposed to follow interse merit in all admissions. The Archbishop said he could not understand why the Government was trying to undermine this effort, after allowing a large percentage of seats to be set apart for the rich in other colleges.
