Bangalore: The Bellary Thermal Power Station’s (BTPS) first unit, which will be the State’s largest power generating unit, is all set to begin generating power from August.

The 500-MW unit will be synchronised with the State power grid in August, BTPS executive director H.M. Raghunatha Rao told The Hindu.

The commercial operation of the unit, which is being set up at a cost of Rs. 2,100 crore, is expected to begin some time in October after several tests are conducted. It will generate about 3,500 million units of power a year.

Coal will be supplied to the new unit from the end of July, for which a separate rail link has been provided from the project site to the Hospet-Bellary railway line.

The BTPS, which is located at Kuditini village, about 22 km from Bellary, will have two generating units with a capacity of 500 MW each. Work on setting up the second unit will begin soon after environmental clearance is obtained. The second unit is expected to be ready in about three years.

Apart from being the largest power generating unit in the state, unit I has already achieved several firsts in the process of implementation. It is the first power generating unit in the country to use waste water on a large scale for power generation. Water being let out from farmers’ fields is being pumped to the BTPS from a distance of about 37 km. This waste water is purified through reverse osmosis.

The BTPS is also expected to achieve savings as it has reduced the manpower requirement by nearly 50 per cent compared to conventional thermal power stations.

The chimney of the BTPS, which is 275 m high, is the tallest structure in Karnataka, according to Mr. Rao.
