Loss in Macherla alone put at Rs.3 crore Water enters PDS godowns, rice mills

MACHERLA (GUNTUR District): Seventy-five year-old Sheik Mohammed Ghouse is at his wits end as he lost all his belongings in the Friday night’s Chandravanka rivulet flood, which according to him was the worst-ever he had seen since 1964. The loss in the town is estimated at Rs.3 crore, while the district administration officially puts the loss at Rs.70 lakh for entire district. Living in Pathabazaar area, by the time he got alerted water had entered his house in the afternoon and did not have resources to carry his luggage to safer zones and by the time he returned to his small dwelling of two rooms, majority of the goods got washed away in the receding water. On Saturday morning walls of all houses and streets were proof enough to what level water had entered in 11 wards of the Municipality. Six wards were the worst affected along the banks of Chandravanka, but even those far away were affected as the drains worked as good conduit for the gushing waters to reach main bazaar area. Inspection
Municipal, police and fire officials watched the water level increase from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. trying their best to evacuate people to safer zones, but could not do anything else. On Monday also not much relief work was in progress as majority of Government officials were busy preparing for Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s arrival for inspection. Inclement weather, however, cancelled his trip, but District Collector Mohammed Ali Rafat, Superintendent of Police Mahesh Laddha, three Ministers Kanna Lakshmi Narayana, Kasu Krishna Reddy and Murudugu Hanumantha Rao visited several affected wards and consoled people on Saturday morning. The Ministers visited Government Hospital, which was under four feet of water and silt got deposited in all the rooms. Transport Minister Kanna Lakshmi Narayana said that Chief Minister was being briefed about the situation every two hours and all possible help and compensation given to the victims. On Saturday they were running a camp for the affected people (970 of them), who were unable to cook in their houses. Some NGOs, KCP Cements and District Administration distributed lemon rice packets, biscuits and blankets. Rice, sugar damaged
Water entered several public distribution system godowns and rice mills leading to large-scale damage, sugar got melted and silt got settled in all the houses and roads. Many of the cement traders lost heavily with 5 feet of water getting stagnated there for 10 hours. People went back into their houses from 4 a.m. onwards.
