Soman elected SNDP Yogam president

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: M.N. Soman has been unanimously elected president of the 104-year-old Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam.

The announcement declaring Dr. Soman as the new president was made by Returning Officer Binu Vasudev in the presence of Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan during a special meeting called for the purpose at the Sree Narayana College, Cherthala on Saturday.

Dr. Soman, who had earlier served as the SNDP Devaswom secretary, SN Trust executive member and president of the Aluva SNDP Yogam, was elected to the post which fell vacant following the demise of J. Kamalasan in May 2005.

A native of Neericode in Aluva, Dr. Soman had retired as the chief surgeon from the Ernakulam General Hospital in 1992. His family consists of wife, Maheswari, and two daughters – Urmila, a gynaecologist and laparoscopic surgeon, and Uthara, a Ph.D. Sociology research scholar at the Kariavattom University Centre.

Mr. Natesan, speaking to reporters after the meeting, said the SNDP stance on the demand to allow “neat and devout” members of the public into the Guruvayur temple had not changed. However, the SNDP stood for a consensus among Hindu organisations and believers on the issue rather than for an autocratic decision, he said.
