Post-harvest loss of food items estimated at 40 per cent; lack of preservation facilities blamed for this The Bosch unit will train representatives from SHGs and NGOs in quality food packaging
BANGALORE: The “Bosch Mobile Agro Pack”, an initiative to demonstrate to and empower farmers adapt the latest packaging technology of food articles, was launched here on Saturday by agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan. The M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation will be associated in the training component of the Bosch initiative. Post-harvest loss of most foodgrains and other farm produce is now 40 per cent, mainly because of lack of adequate packaging and storing methods and reducing this loss could make more food available to more people and the cost may come down, Prof. Swaminathan said. The Indian agriculture industry was on the brink of another revolution that could modernise the food chain as the food production would double in 10 years, the “father of the green revolution” said. The unorganised package food products in India formed 75 per cent of the branded food market and the sector was growing fast. The support from Bosch would contribute to the GDP through value addition at a time when growth of the agricultural sector had become a prime concern, Thomas Buehler, Business Head for Bosch Packaging Technology in India, said. The packaging division had global business of € 600 million last year and growing at the annual rate of 25 per cent in India, the fastest market in the world in this sector. Customers included companies making branded detergents to snacks and confectionary. “By taking technology to farmers, we are helping them improve the quality and standards of packaging and become more competitive, thereby partnering the progress of India’s agrarian economy,” the Patna-born Mr. Buehler said. The Bosch Mobile Agro Pack would help train self-help groups, NGOs and government-run training facilities. Financial support would be arranged through collaboration with many banks.
